Gresham House

The Sunday Times features the  LF Gresham House UK Micro Cap fund in its Fund Focus profile.

Fund profile

What it does:

Invests in small British businesses including those on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM), which is home to fledgling companies. The fund is fairly concentrated, with just 49 holdings.

What it invests in:

More than two-thirds of the businesses have a market capitalisation of less than £250m. Top holdings include City Pub Group, which owns bars across the south of England; Knights Group, which provides security at stadiums including Wembley; and Martin Sorrell’s new marketing venture, S4 Capital.

The fund has returned 43.2% over three years, compared with a sector average of 36.3%.

What the manager says:

Brendan Gulston, co-manager of the fund, said: “While there is likely to be more volatility this year, that means opportunities too. Large businesses are often impacted by macro factors, such as Brexit, but smaller companies tend to operate in more insulated, niche markets, which means they can be more agile in economic headwinds.”

What the experts say:

Laith Khalaf at Hargreaves Lansdown said: “Smaller companies are a rich hunting ground for
talented fund managers because they tend to be under-researched, and Gresham House is a great example of what can be achieved. A concentrated portfolio adds risk but should deliver handsome returns if the manager picks the right stocks.”
